Xu Qin is an assistant professor in the Research Methodology program in the Department of Psychology in Education at the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. She holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago and a B.S. and an M.S. in Statistics from the Renmin University of China.

Her research focuses on solving cutting-edge methodological problems in multilevel modeling and causal mediation analysis and employing innovative methods to conduct educational program evaluations. Supported by the National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship, her dissertation developed innovative methods for investigating causal mediation mechanisms in multisite evaluations with a focus on quantifying between-site heterogeneity in the mechanisms. Her work has won the 2019 Outstanding Dissertation Award granted by the American Educational Research Association Division D and the 2016 Joint Statistical Meetings Student Paper Award granted by the American Statistical Association, and has appeared in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series A (Statistics in Society), the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, and Statistics in Medicine. She has also presented her work at multiple national and international conferences in education, statistics, and policy analysis and at multiple academic institutions. At the beginning of her career, she was awarded the National Study of Learning Mindsets Early Career Fellowship and received research funding from the Spencer Foundation.
